How can you recognize heatstroke?

Heatstroke is a serious problem in many workplaces, inside or out. In hot months, outside weather is a hazard. Inside some facilities, the temperatures can soar due to a lack of air conditioning.

If you suffer from heatstroke on the job, you can seek workers' compensation. It will help cover your medical costs and lost wages, among other benefits.

What is heatstroke?

Heatstroke is caused when your body overheats. This is most common when you're overexposed to high temperatures or are too physically active in high temperatures. Heatstroke is the most serious form of heat-related injury. Without treatment, it can lead to death.

What are the signs of heatstroke?

There are many signs of heatstroke that people should recognize. Some of them include:

  • Racing heartbeat
  • Headache
  • Rapid breathing
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Altered mental state
  • Alteration in sweating
  • High body temperature
  • Flushed skin

Someone suffering from heatstroke may have a core body temperature of 104 F or higher, which is the main sign. If you take a person's temperature, and it is that high, it's vital to call 911 and get them to a cool area as soon as possible.

When responding to an incident of heatstroke, the immediate actions to take include:

  • Removing any excess clothing from the person
  • Moving them to the shade or inside an air-conditioned building
  • Cooling the person by any means necessary including using cool tubs of water, garden hoses or even ice packs to lower their body temperature

Heatstroke can come on quickly. Recognizing these signs could be the difference between life and death for a victim, so if you see them, call 911 right away.
