Roaring Spring:

Chemical exposure could be a hazard in your workplace

Chemical exposure can be extremely dangerous depending on the kinds of chemicals that you work with. Some chemicals can enter the body through injections, direct contact, the air or other methods. In any work environment with dangerous chemicals, you must be certain of how you can or should handle these hazardous materials.

Chemical hazards pose many threats to workers including:

  • Sensitization
  • Carcinogenicity
  • Irritation

Chemical exposure can sometimes lead to burns, allergic reactions and other serious medical events.

In the workplace, all hazardous chemicals should be identified. Information about those chemicals and their hazards needs to be readily available to workers and written in a way that is easy to understand. In your workplace, your employer should have labels and safety data sheets for each of the chemicals that are in your work environment. Additionally, you should be trained to handle these chemicals appropriately. You should also be trained to know how to protect yourself against exposure.

What should you do if you are exposed to a dangerous chemical in the workplace?

You should first respond by seeking medical treatment and taking steps to manage the exposure. For instance, if you get a chemical in your eyes, there may be an eye-wash station or particular protocol that you are to follow. Make sure you do so to help protect your sight. Your employer or co-workers may also want to call for emergency help.

Chemicals have the potential to do a lot of good, but mismanagement is dangerous. If you are hurt due to chemical exposure, don't be scared to reach out and ask for help.
