On Behalf of | Aug 16, 2019 | Workers' Compensation |

When you get hurt, the last thing you want to worry about is having to come up with money for medical bills. Fortunately, if you were hurt on the job, workers’ compensation will be there to help cover your medical expenses, lost wages and more.

The Pennsylvania Workmen’s Compensation Act has been in place since 1915. The system is designed to help protect employees and employers, helping them both avoid litigation. On one hand, employees are able to get the medical care and financial support they need. On the other, the employer is able to avoid lawsuits for compensation.

Is workers’ compensation insurance required for most employers in Pennsylvania?

Yes, and what that means is that the majority of employers carry this insurance and their employees have access to the benefits that come with it. There are some exceptions, such as people who are covered under other workers’ compensation acts. Railroad workers, federal employees, agricultural workers of some types and even domestic servants may not be eligible for workers’ compensation.

When are employees covered by workers’ compensation insurance?

Employees are covered from day one. The moment they start the job, they are covered against injuries. They will continue to be covered by workers’ compensation until they are no longer employed by that employer.

What should you do if you think you have suffered a workplace injury?

If you think you’ve suffered a workplace injury, tell your employer and go to the hospital or your primary care physician for help. After that, you can start your claim with your employer’s help. An attorney can help you file an appeal should your claim get denied.
